Panama and Costa Rica were the first two countries to have their International Year of Cooperative lottery tickets. The commemorative lottery tickets, which were sold in January 2012, included the IYC logo and slogan: Cooperative enterprises build a better world” as well as the cooperative flag. Through this initiative, thousands of ordinary people were able to know about the existence of the IYC; a distinction granted by the United Nations to the cooperative movement worldwide.

The largest American automobile manufacturer, General Motors, went bankrupt in 2009 and had to be partly nationalised. Since one of its labour unions also bought a substantial amount of its stock, it would be correct to say that it was partly “mutualised” at the same time. Today the company is back in profit, having overcome the appalling losses of recent years.

Philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has launched a Co-operative Group-sponsored initiative to teach British communities about extreme poverty around the world.

The Co-Operative Movement of Guyana continues to play a significant role in empowering citizens to achieve their fullest potential. This is according to the Labour Minister, Dr. Nanda Gopaul, who noted that cooperatives must strive to be an independent body with little or no government interference.

The U.S. Overseas Cooperative Development Council Board of Directors has named Paul Hazen its executive director, effective February 1. Hazen brings more than 30 years’ experience in international and domestic cooperative development to the organization. He recently stepped down as president and CEO of the Washington, D.C.-based National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA), the oldest national cooperative organization in the U.S. Under Hazen’s leadership, NCBA’s international cooperative development portfolio grew from $8 million annually to over $30 million.
