ICA-Americas promotes youth participation in the cooperative movement of the continent

Friday 10 September 2010

A group of young people from Dominican Republic visited Mexico from 23 to 29 May, 2010, to interchange experiences and analyze different aspects related to the role yuoth play in the cooperative movement in the region.

During that week, young Dominicans were welcomed by co-op representatives from various cities and towns in Mexico to gain first-hand knowledge about a variety of experiences in different sectors of cooperatives in the country.

This interchange initiative carried out by ICA-Americas complies with the agreement signed and the activities proposed in the VI Cooperative Youth Meeting which was held within the First Cooperative Summit of the Americas in Guadalajara, Mexico, in September 2009.

There is a clear commitment of young cooperators to promote youth participation in the cooperative sector.

Through its Youth Comittee –before known as Youth Cooperators Network- ICA-Americas seeks more active participation of this age sector and its representation with the right to speak and to vote within this regional integration body. The idea is to set the grounds which enable the generational renewal in the cooperative movement in the years to come.

The host cooperatives in Mexico are: 1. Red de Jóvenes Cooperativistas and its President, José Antonio Cháves 2. Federación Cajas Populares ALIANZA 3. Federación Caja Popular Mexicana 4. Federación Caja Valladolí 5. Caja Ciudad Cruz Azul 6. Caja San Rafael 7. Caja Popular Cigualpilli of Tonalá 8. Caja Popular of San José de Tlajomulco 9. Caja Popular Manzanillo

The guests from Dominican Republic are: Instituto de Desarrollo y Crédito Cooperativo (IDECOOP) and Cooperativa Nacional de Servicios Múltiples de los Maestros (COOPNAMA).
