The federal government's Rural and Co-operatives Secretariat has released its latest statistical report on the Canadian co-operative sector.
The report, based on data submitted in 2008, indicates that Canada has just over 9,000 co-operatives with 18 million members, 155,000 employees and $252 billion in assets. The figures include credit unions, but do not include insurance co-operatives or mutual insurance companies.
The report breaks down the statistics by province and economic sector. It also shows that 205 new co-operatives were incorporated in 2008. The report can be downloaded (large file in .pdf format) at http://s.coop/coopstats2008.
