The 2nd strategic planning session took place during the LXXVI meeting of the Board of Directors

27 October 2019

In Ixtapa, Mexico, the Board of Directors worked on the consolidation of the draft strategic plan for the period 2020 – 2023.

This was already the second time a strategic planning session with the Board was carried out in order to inform the strategic plan 2020 - 2023. This activity is a priority for the region in the framework of the partnership between ICA and the European Commission “Cooperatives in Development – People-centred businesses in action (#Coops4Dev)”.

The participatory methodology of the session was guided by a team of the International Development Assistance Services (IDAS) from KPMG, the consulting firm accompanying Cooperatives of the Americas in the planning and implementation together with the Americas team of #Coops4Dev. During the session, the team of the Regional Office of the Americas together with the IDAS team presented in detail the results of a survey applied previously to the representatives of all member organizations of the region, which aimed to know their strategic priorities and needs. The results of the survey will also be used to inform and align the strategy plan.

In the framework of the strategic planning sessions, the President of Cooperatives of the America, Graciela Fernandez, invited all participants and members of organizations present to discuss and deliberate on the topic and emphasized the great commitment of the delegates during the sessions. She also highlighted the role of cooperatives in the current scenario where they have a unique position to experiment, test, defend and expand solutions to common global problems.

During this same session Martin Chrisney, General Director of IDAS - KPMG stressed the importance of betting on the creation of the value proposition taking into consideration the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and urged to start generating small changes in the operational practices of a cooperative, such as improving efforts to recycle and reuse, or include transformative business strategies linked to new business lines and new sources of financing.

Starting the Board of Directors on August 28, 2019 Ariel Guarco, President of the International Cooperative Alliance, who was a special guest of the Board, announced the details of the World Conference and General Assembly that will take place during the month of October 2019 in Kigali Rwanda, designed to celebrate “Cooperatives in Development” and the EU-ICA partnership.

At the same time, the President of Cooperatives of the Americas, extended to the attendees the invitation to what will be the XXI Regional Conference of Cooperatives of the Americas, this activity being declared of national interest by Decree No. 41808-MTSS of the President of the Republic and the Minister of Labor and Social Security of the Republic of Costa Rica, held November 18th until 20th in San Jose, Costa Rica.
